Siemens Mobility has inveiled a full-scale prototype of the new metro train for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line.

The model provides a representation of the train’s design and layout ahead of its introduction on the new 23-kilometre metro line in Greater Western Sydney.

The prototype was assembled in a Western Sydney warehouse and closely reflects the final train in terms of dimensions, shape, and key design features.

It has been used to assess various elements, including interior lighting, emergency systems, and passenger information displays. Transport authorities, manufacturers, and engineers have reviewed the model to refine these aspects before production.

Ahead of manufacturing 12 new trains, engineers and designers tested the prototype to verify the layout, materials, and ergonomics aligned with project specifications. Representatives from different user groups, including individuals with limited mobility and sensory needs, participated in testing.

The seat upholstery design for the trains has also been finalised. The fabric will feature an artwork titled Ngurra Baduwa, created by Western Sydney-based artists Leanne Redpath, Tina Barahanos, and Alexandra Byrne. The design incorporates references to the Cumberland Plain’s landscape, with grey and blue tones representing the night sky for general seating and yellow patterns symbolising meeting places around waterholes for priority seating.

Approximately 2,300 square metres of fabric will be required to upholster all seats across the 12 trains.

Once in operation, the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line will connect St Marys and Bradfield, passing through the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. The system is designed to carry up to 7,740 passengers per hour in each direction.
