nVent ERICO Rail
Heating System

The nVent ERICO Rail Heating System is the smart solution that is up to 30% more energy efficient than constant wattage heating elements.

Environmental sustainability is a core strategic value across many industries, especially in rail. Networks throughout the world have set forth ambitious climate protection goals that call for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Finding ways to reduce energy consumption is key to meeting these targets, which is why several major European rail networks have embraced the nVent ERICO Rail Heating System as the environmentally sustainable way to melt ice on track switches. nVent is a leading supplier of rail heating systems with a comprehensive portfolio of systems and solutions that contribute to safe, reliable operations during the winter months.

Networks operating in cold weather climates can consume as much as 500 megawatts of electricity per season operating constant wattage switch heaters. The nVent ERICO Self Regulating Switch Heating System automatically senses changes in ambient temperature, delivering robust, ice-melting heat when and where it is needed. With self-regulating heating cables that vary power output based on temperature, this system is both effective and up to 30% more energy efficient than constant wattage heater elements. Reducing switch heating energy consumption by 150 megawatts per season the “win-win” solution that lowers costs and helps railways meet environmental sustainability goals.

Self-regulating Switch Heating Solutions

Self-regulating heating cables work by automatically adjusting their power output to compensate for rail temperature changes. In other words, the cable can feel the rail temperature, automatically releasing heat only when it is needed, and varying heat output along the length of the cable based on rail temperature variations. Self-regulating heating cable technology is based on a conductive polymer core that reacts to rail temperature drops by contracting, which increases the number of heat delivering electrical paths. Conversely the conductive core expands as temperatures raise, which decreases the number of electrical paths to restrict heat output. Because the reaction is happening in the cable itself, nVent self-regulating switch heating solutions do not require a complex underlying systems, however, it easily be equipped with a control system. nVent offers comprehensive control systems as part of our switch heating portfolio that can be configured for onsite or remote operation.
