Northern Provides First Look at New Northumberland Line

Northern has released new dashcam footage to provide a first look at the upcoming Northumberland line.

The footage was taken from the front of a Class 158 train as it travelled along the new route, which is due to open in 2024.

This journey also provides a glimpse of the construction sites for the line’s new stations: Northumberland Park, Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Blyth Bebside and Bedlington.

Once complete, the project will deliver 18 miles of upgraded track to provide enhanced connectivity between Newcastle to Ashington.

This has been made possible thanks to the government’s Restoring Your Railway Fund, which also successfully restored the Dartmoor line in Devon in 2021.

Kerry Peters, Regional Director at Northern, said:

“Bringing new rail services to the North East as part of the Northumberland Line is really exciting and we’re honoured to be able to connect all the communities based along the route.

“Northern will be operating all passenger services and we are already developing plans to provide a timetable that will help local communities and deliver this positive impact for the region.”

Northern has also announced that it recently received planning permission to create a new facility close to Ashington station for its conductors working on this route.
