Switzerland: SBB Awards Contract to Construct Ligerz Tunnel

SBB has awarded a contract to ARGE IBD, a joint venture led by Implenia in partnership with Bernasconi and De Luca, for the construction of the Ligerz Tunnel Lot 2.

This contract is valued at 220 million CHF (230 million EUR).

Its scope includes the construction of a 2.1-kilometre-long double-track tunnel, of which around 1,850 metres will be mined and around 250 metres will be cut-and-cover.

In addition, the joint venture will build four escape tunnels and a 114-metre-long viaduct for the N5 motorway exit.

The project aims to eliminate the last railway bottleneck on the Jura Foot line between Lausanne and Biel.

The current single-track railway travels through a narrow space between a lake and a slope, where the national road N5 runs. A new tunnel is therefore required to construct the double-track line.

Christian Späth, Head Division Civil Engineering at Implenia said:

“We look forward to carrying out this large and complex rail infrastructure project together with our consortium partners and to once again demonstrating our many years of experience and expertise in this area.”
