Nokia & Terralpha Deploy a DWDM Optical Network in France

Nokia and Terralpha Accelerate Territorial Coverage by Deploying a DWDM Optical Network Along Railway Lines

  • Deployment of a DWDM optical network connecting more than 150 contact points over 20,000 km of fiber along the railways in France
  • 400GE Service Transport Ready Network Using ROADM Colorless Flexgrid Technology
  • Improvement of broadband coverage of territories with a network throughout the country to offer Ethernet services up to 400GE

Nokia has been selected by Terralpha (subsidiary of SNCF Réseau) to deploy an optical DWDM network connecting 150 contact points spread across France along 20,000 km of railway lines. This network will make it possible to accelerate very high speed coverage of all territories by relying on the SNCF optical fiber network.

As part of this contract, Nokia will deploy its 1830 PSS solution which integrates ROADM (Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer) technology, the OTN (Optical Transport Network) switch, and high-speed coherent optics. This solution, compact, scalable and easy to install, will allow simple and rapid activation of the service.

The deployment of 150 access points should take place in 2023 and 2024. This unique network throughout France will make it possible to bring ultra-high speed to the territories and will contribute to the digital development of France by opening up certain areas white.

Matthieu Bourguignon, vice-president of Europe for the Enterprise activity at Nokia, indicated:

“The network of railways which extends over more than 20,000 kilometers will make it possible to accelerate the deployment of broadband throughout France and We are very proud to collaborate with Terralpha for this ambitious project. The first deployments have already started and the tests are very conclusive. Nokia has strong expertise in optical networking solutions and our scalable platforms provide the flexibility and performance needed to optimize core networks, while maximizing return on investment.”

Gabriel Chenevoy, Managing Director of Terralpha, added:

“Terralpha is pleased to be able to build a decisive relationship with Nokia and to complement its existing pure photonic 400G network with OTN technology, while retaining the major advantages of alternative paths, territorial coverage, sovereignty, and ultra-low latency.

“These characteristics make all the difference for our customers, and realize our mission to bring ultra-high speed to the heart of the regions.”
