Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), jointly with its regional subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHI-AP), has announced receipt of an order from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) for a set of 8 two-car trains (16 cars) for use on the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system of the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (SPLRT) line.
The order forms part of a project previously awarded to MHI in January 2023 to enhance capacity on the SPLRT line, as well as an order from May 2023 for an additional 8 trains.

Opened in 2003 and serving northeast Singapore; the Sengkang-Punggol LRT network connects two stations on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North East Line (Sengkang Station and Punggol Station) to their respective residential areas. MHI initially provided both the trains and all systems for its opening, and, since then, the Group has provided after-sales services, as well as enhanced the system itself for over 20 years with deliveries of additional trainsets, the implementation of two-car operations, an expansion of the depot, and a significant increase in transport capacity.
Last year saw the commercial operation entry of a set of two new trainsets, and this latest order will see the delivery of additional units of the same model. In total, MHI plans to deliver a total of 33 trainsets, which will include the 8 additional trainsets covered by this contract.
Recent years have seen population growth and commercial expansion drive residential development across both the Sengkang and Punggol districts, resulting in a rise in LRT ridership. This order is expected to provide support to meet growing transport demands, as well as provide residents with a more convenient means of transportation.
