Norfolk Southern and Wabtec have expanded their locomotive modernisation programme, with 33 Evolution Series locomotives set to be converted from DC to AC traction.
Under the programme, Wabtec will modernise Norfolk Southern’s ES44DC locomotives with AC traction motors, upgraded control systems and digital technologies. The converted locomotives will be designated ES44ACMs.
The upgrades are intended to improve locomotive performance, reliability and efficiency while extending the operational life of the existing fleet. The modernisation package will also introduce enhanced diagnostic and maintenance planning capabilities.
AC traction can provide improved adhesion and hauling performance, particularly under demanding operating conditions, while the companies expect the upgraded locomotives to have lower lifecycle maintenance requirements.

Norfolk Southern was the launch customer for the original ES44DC locomotives in 2004. The two companies have worked together on locomotive modernisation projects since 2015, contributing to more than 1,000 DC-to-AC locomotive conversions across North America.
The programme also forms part of Norfolk Southern’s wider fleet modernisation strategy and supports its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity through the introduction of more efficient technologies.

Modernisation work is being carried out at Wabtec facilities in the United States. The first upgraded locomotive was shipped to Norfolk Southern in August 2026, with the remaining units scheduled for delivery through 2027.
