Dutch Premiere: Train with ATO Carries Passengers | Rolling Stock

A Stadler GTW train in Groningen equipped with ATO carried passengers for the first time. The train, on loan from Arriva Nederland, features Grade of Automation 2, meaning it is capable of driving and stopping on its own. The train also possesses a train protection system though a train driver is able to intervene and override it at any point. The ATO tests have been underway since October 2019. In addition to Stadler and Arriva Nederland ProRail and the province of Groningen were co-organisers of the test run.

Alstom Delivers 130th Tram to Bordeaux | Rolling Stock

The city of Bordeaux has received its 130th Citadis tram from Alstom, meaning it now has one of the largest tram fleets in the country. The first Citadis trams began carrying passengers in Bordeaux in 2003. Bordeaux has a tram network measuring 77km. To avoid unsightly overhead lines in the city centre, Alstom developed its APS ground-level power supply technology, which it has installed on 35km of the total network.

Rail Industry Response to HS2 Go-Ahead | Infrastructure

The prime minister of the UK, Boris Johnson gave the go-ahead for HS2 in the House of Commons, saying “We are going to get this done. And to ensure that we do so without further blowouts on either cost or schedule we are today taking decisive action to restore discipline to the programme.” The Rail Delivery Group, and all the major rolling stock manufacturers welcomed the decision, as did industry more broadly and the British Chamber of Commerce since the increase in capacity will be a great boost to the UK economy.

UK Government to Give HS2 the Go-Ahead | Infrastructure

After requesting a review into the rail infrastructure project that will connect London to the North of England, the UK government has given the go-ahead for HS2. There have been concerns by some that the project was becoming too expensive. However, the Oakervee Review into HS2 recommends going ahead with it. The high-speed line has broad cross-party support, having been initially proposed under the Labour government. The Green Party remains opposed to HS2, though in favour of high-speed rail in general.

CAF Wins Contracts with VY and HKL in Norway and Finland | Rolling Stock

CAF has won contracts in Norway and Finland. In Norway, CAF’s Swedish subsidiary Euromaint has entered into a nine-year contract with VY for the maintenance of the Bergen Line fleet. A new maintenance workshop is under construction where CAF will deliver on the contract. In Finland CAF will deliver five new M300 metro vehicles for the city of Helsinki. These are in addition to the 20 M300 trains CAF has already delivered.

Danish State Railways Orders Talgo 230 Trainsets | Rolling Stock

Danish State Railways has entered into a contract with Talgo for eight 13-car trainsets. This order is part of a framework agreement worth 500 million euros (548 million USD). The trains will be fully compatible for cross-border services into Germany as well as other European countries. The train in question, the Talgo 230, is one previously ordered by Deutsche Bahn, where it is currently known as the ECx. Talgo will deliver on its order for Danish State Railways after completing its order with Deutsche Bahn.
