Footbridges are among the busiest and most exposed structures on the rail network. Used throughout the day and night, the quality of lighting can have a direct bearing on how safe and comfortable passengers feel when using them. Many existing footbridges are also in need of renovation, with ageing, inefficient or failed lighting installations.

Retrofitting lighting on rail footbridges is rarely a straightforward task. Existing structures can present a variety of practical challenges, including restricted installation access, existing structural features and non-horizontal mounting surfaces.

These surfaces can complicate the installation and orientation of conventional luminaires, sometimes requiring additional mounting brackets or site-specific installation solutions. Where works require rail possessions or restricted access, installation time can also become an important consideration, potentially turning a relatively straightforward lighting upgrade into a more involved engineering exercise.

A Purpose-Built Lighting Solution

In response to the practical requirements of infrastructure lighting projects, i-Vision Lighting Solutions has developed a new linear LED system suitable for surface-mounted installation on railway footbridges and other infrastructure.

Launched in August, the Elektra 8325 – Diamond is a self-contained, easy-to-install linear LED luminaire system incorporating pre-installed Elektra Linear luminaires within a dedicated outer carrier. The arrangement provides consistent alignment and is designed to simplify on-site installation.

The Diamond name reflects the profile of the outer carrier, which presents the Elektra Linear luminaire at a fixed 45° mounting angle. This provides a consistent luminaire orientation without requiring the angle to be set individually during installation.

The system weighs approximately 2.2Kg/m, helping to minimise additional load on the structure. Its slim profile and precision-engineered diffuser also give it a discreet, modern appearance, designed to complement contemporary infrastructure.

Durability and Performance

Environmental resilience is where the Elektra 8325 – Diamond earns its keep. Railway footbridges can be exposed to the elements and heavy public use throughout the year, placing significant demands on installed equipment.

The system is IP66-rated against water and dust ingress and IK10-rated against impact. The outer carrier and luminaire body are manufactured from marine-grade aluminium with an AA20 anodised finish, providing corrosion resistance and durability for long-term outdoor use.

That toughness doesn’t come at the cost of light quality or efficiency. The system runs on i-Vision’s 48V 1712 LED engine, using 240 Luxeon 2835 LEDs per metre and delivering an efficacy of 71.6 lm/W.

A custom-machined frosted polycarbonate diffuser spreads light evenly along the length of the luminaire, helping to reduce glare and visible hotspots and providing consistent illumination intended to support good visibility and visual comfort for bridge users.

Each luminaire is also galvanically isolated and operates on separated extra-low voltage across a 42–48VDC supply, providing electrical separation between the lighting system and the metal structure to which it is mounted.

Standards and Control Options

Rail infrastructure projects can impose demanding technical and lighting requirements, and these have been considered in the development of the Elektra 8325 – Diamond.

The system is designed in accordance with applicable LED module performance requirements, while its output can be configured for lighting schemes designed to achieve P-class requirements under BS 5489, subject to project-specific lighting design and assessment.

Output can be managed through external dim control or an engineer dim facility, with support for 1–10V, DALI, DMX, TE Controls and VK-1 engineering dimming protocols.

This configurability allows the output to be set to suit the requirements of a project-specific lighting design rather than requiring a different fitting for every application.

The Elektra 8325 – Diamond can also integrate with proximity sensors, photocells and ice-warning systems, allowing lighting output to respond to conditions and footfall rather than operating continuously at a fixed level. Emergency lighting options are also available.

The system has been developed with relevant rail and public-lighting requirements in mind, including requirements referenced within RIS-7702-INS and BS 5489. As with any infrastructure lighting installation, project-specific compliance is subject to the requirements, design and assessment of the individual scheme.

Designed for Rapid Retrofit

Installation of the Elektra 8325 – Diamond is designed to be fast and straightforward.

The outer carrier fastens to the mounting surface using M4 security screws, with optional anti-vibration mounts available where additional isolation is required. The luminaires themselves arrive factory-sealed and drop directly onto pre-installed mounting brackets inside the carrier, where they are secured using M3 countersunk security screws.

This means no on-site sealing or weatherproofing of the factory-sealed luminaire is required.

Electrical connections use 3M Scotchlok IDC connectors rather than traditional junction boxes, helping to simplify electrical connection during installation. Once fitted, all wiring is concealed within the outer carrier for a clean and protected finish.

The system comes in a standard 2,040 mm length, with bespoke sizes available in 50 mm increments. This allows the lighting system to be specified to suit the structure rather than requiring the structure or installation to accommodate a standard fitting length.

A Practical Approach to Footbridge Lighting

The Elektra 8325 – Diamond combines i-Vision’s Elektra linear lighting platform with a dedicated outer carrier, providing a robust surface-mounted lighting solution suitable for railway footbridges and other infrastructure.

Its fixed luminaire orientation, durable construction, configurable lighting output and straightforward installation make it particularly suited to retrofit projects where access time can be restricted and long-term reliability is important.
