The Nuremberg-Regensburg railway line has officially reopened to rail traffic following the completion of a slew of modernisation works.

As a project partner, Hitachi Rail has celebrated its own contributions to the technological renewal of the heavily-utilised section of the European Rhine-Danube transport corridor.

The route stands as one of Bavaria’s most important rail connections, and includes cross-border traffic to Austria. Its modernisation forms part of Deutsche Bahn’s wider programme to modernise 40 rail corridors through 2036, with work expected to sustainably increase both infrastructure performance and quality.

Passengers travelling along the route will now benefit from newly implemented signalling and control technology, all of which is expected to translate into improved punctuality, better connection reliability, and greater dependability.

Measures delivered by Hitachi Rail include the upgrade of eight existing electronic interlockings, the renewal of the axle counter system as an ETCS-ready solution, the migration of the control and operating system within the Munich control district, and a slew of signalling-related modifications along the route.

Hannes Beck, Project Manager at Hitachi Rail, said:

With the commissioning of these upgrades, the conditions are now in place to operate this section of the network in a more stable and flexible manner.

Our signalling and control technology plays a central role and also provides the foundation for future upgrades such as ETCS. A decisive factor in the project’s success was the close and collaborative partnership with DB InfraGO.

Hitachi Rail is also involved with the modernisation of the adjacent Obertraubling-Passau corridor, with work having begun in June 2026.
