Hitachi Rail has commissioned new electronic signalling systems at Ciulnița and Fetești railway stations in Romania as part of infrastructure modernisation work carried out for CFR SA.
The two stations are located on the TEN-T Corridor 22, also known as Pan-European Corridor IV, connecting Central and Eastern Europe along the Nürnberg–Prague–Vienna–Budapest–Curtici–Simeria–Brașov–Bucharest–Constanța route.

The wider modernisation programme has included railway infrastructure and track rehabilitation, civil engineering works, upgrades to power supply and overhead contact line systems, and the installation of telecommunications equipment. This includes video surveillance, passenger information and public address systems.
At Ciulnița, the new signalling system entered service in December 2025, followed by commissioning at Fetești in June 2026.
Both stations are now equipped with Hitachi Rail’s ESTW/IXL L90 RO electronic interlocking system, based on the company’s Technology and Application System (TAS) platform and IPR7.0 software. This is the first deployment of the technology on Romania’s railway network.
The system includes a Data Logger to support maintenance and diagnostics, as well as a Cyber Security Observer for cybersecurity monitoring. It also replaces the SELMIS platform, which has been used across Romania’s railway network for more than 20 years.
Claudiu Seicean, CEO of Hitachi Rail in Romania, said:At Hitachi Rail, we believe the future of rail transport relies on smart technologies and strong partnerships. We are proud to support the digital transformation of Romania’s railway infrastructure. This project reaffirms our commitment to a high-performing, digital, and interoperable railway system aligned with European standards.
The signalling equipment was developed and implemented in accordance with European CENELEC railway standards covering safety, availability and reliability.
The modernisation of the two stations is intended to support the digitalisation of railway operations and provide more timely information for passengers.
