Once fully completed, the Hanoi Metro Line 3 project will span 12.5 kilometres and include 12 stations, enhancing connectivity for 1.6 million residents across six districts in Hanoi.

The initial stage of the line covers 8.5 kilometres, featuring eight elevated stations. Upon completion, the metro system is expected to handle a peak capacity of 23,900 passengers per hour in each direction.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Minh, Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB) said:

“We want to bring reliable, safe and efficient transport solutions for commuters in Hanoi and with our strategic partnership with Alstom, Hanoi Line 3 is introducing a world class metro system to our commuters, helping improve Hanoi’s transportation systems.”

Alstom’s involvement in this project dates back to 2017, when the company, as part of a consortium with Colas Rail and Hitachi Rail, secured a contract to provide an integrated metro system for Hanoi.

Alstom’s contribution includes the supply and integration of ten four-car Metropolis trains, the Urbalis 400 Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, and the provision of power supply and depot equipment in partnership with Colas Rail.

The design of the Hanoi Metro system prioritises passenger comfort and convenience. The Metropolis trains feature wide doors to improve passenger flow and include dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility.

The trains’ lightweight aluminium construction also reduces energy consumption and advances sustainability goals.

Additionally, the trains’ exterior and interior designs draw inspiration from local Vietnamese culture, incorporating motifs such as dragon fruit and rice paddy fields, which enhance the metro’s cultural relevance and aesthetic appeal.

As Hanoi Metro Line 3 begins passenger service, it is set to significantly enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and meet the growing mobility demands of Hanoi’s residents, contributing to the city’s ongoing development as a major urban centre.

Toby Tiberghien, Managing Director, East Asia, Alstom, said:

“At Alstom, we're committed to transforming mobility in Vietnam with smarter, greener, and more efficient solutions for everyday commuters. Our expertise in turnkey projects has been crucial in successfully delivering this complex metro project, featuring eight elevated and four underground stations.

“The start of Hanoi Line 3 operations showcases our dedication to meticulous planning and engineering, ensuring that passengers in the nation's capital enjoy safe, efficient, and comfortable journeys every day. I'm proud to see our emblematic Metropolis™ thriving in the vibrant and iconic city of Hanoi, a hub of economic and cultural richness. We thank H.E. Olivier Brochet, French Ambassador to Vietnam, the French and Vietnamese authorities, and all those who have made this project possible.”
