Alstom has been contracted to modernise the railway traffic control system in Katowice, Poland, specifically along the E65 railway line from Katowice Szopienice South to Katowice Piotrowice.
The reconstruction of line E65 is the largest infrastructure project in the history of Polish railways. The project will be carried out by general contractor, Torpol S.A, with Alstom acting as the key subcontractor responsible for the traffic control system.
The modernisation of the E65 railway line will include the separation of urban and long-distance traffic by converting a double-track system to a four-track system from Katowice Szopienice South to Katowice Ligota.
Approximately 100 kilometres of tracks will be reconstructed, 270 turnouts will be installed, over 130 kilometres of new traction network will be constructed and 120 engineering structures will be modernised.
The project also includes the modernisation of 14 platforms and the creation of six new platforms at Katowice Uniwersytet, Katowice Kokociniec, and Katowice Akademia stations.
Furthermore, a modern rail traffic control system will be implemented across all stations, with a new signal box at Katowice Zawodzie and a Local Control Centre (LCS Katowice).
“At Alstom, we work every day for modern and sustainable mobility, both in rolling stock and traffic control solutions. We are bringing unique competencies - acquired through the implementation of projects in Poland and in the world - to the consortium. We are constantly developing our branch in Katowice, which brings together several hundred engineers, programmers, testers, and IT specialists with extensive experience in the Polish and international markets. I am glad that the technologies and solutions developed by our team will have a significant impact on the quality and safety of railway services in the Katowice agglomeration.”
Alstom’s role in the modernisation efforts includes the deployment of the new signal box at Katowice Zawodzie station. They will also establish a technical building at Katowice Ligota station.
The Local Control Centre in Katowice (LCS Katowice) will serve as the hub for the newly installed traffic control systems, which aim to enhance the quality and safety of railway services in the region.
The design and implementation of the traffic control solutions will be handled by Alstom’s branch in Katowice, which is one of the largest producers of railway traffic control systems and equipment in Europe. Alstom will also collaborate with Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki S.A. to execute the project.
This undertaking will build on Alstom’s extensive experience in the Polish market, which includes the first implementation of an ERTMS level 2 system, constructing an ERTMS L2 system on 10 PKP PLK railway lines, and building a control centre for the Warsaw Metro.
