A consortium of Alstom and Colas Rail have contracted with the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to extend Cairo Metro Line 1 from the El-Marg to New El-Marg station. The extension will deliver more efficient services in the area around El Marg. Existing services will not be disrupted for the 24 months it will take for the works to be undertaken.

The contract is worth €12million to Alstom and provides for the construction of 1.2 km of double tracks and the New El-Marg station, as well as the control centre of Line 1. Their portion of the works includes the design, supply and installation of power supply, signalling and telecommunications equipment.
