On July 10 2017, the Citybanan cross-city tunnel under Stockholm will open for revenue. Construction of two new commuter rail stations and the 6km long City Line under Stockholm has been underway since January 2009.

When the City Line opens, the commuter trains will run on two new tracks, segregating them from the district, regional and freight services through the city.

The new commuter stations, Stockholm City and Stockholm Odenplan, are located directly beneath the subway to T-Centralen and Odenplan. This will allow travellers to switch between modes of transport with less hassle.

The existing Karlberg station will be closed and replaced by the new Stockholm Odenplan station when open. Tracks 13-16 at Stockholm Central Station will also stop running commuter trains, which instead will stop at the new Stockholm City Station.

Line Project Manager, Kjell-Åke Averstad, expects the Citybanan to improve the punctuality and frequency of trains through the city.
