Captrain Subsidiary Orders New Siemens Vectron Dual Mode Locomotives

ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft, a subsidiary of Captrain Deutschland, is adding two Vectron dual mode locomotives to its fleet.

Manufactured by Siemens Mobility, the locomotives will be delivered in May and October respectively. The locomotives will be capable of running on diesel fuel and under overhead lines.

In 2020 ITL received four new EURODUAL locomotives from Stadler Rail Valencia. The two new Vectron locomotives are due to replace two pure diesel locomotives and will be used to haul goods such as construction materials, grains and mineral oil. This switch will lower ITL’s energy costs and also cut down on its carbon emissions, making rail an even more sustainable option.

The first of the two locomotives will be delivered on 18 May 2021. It will be around 20m long and have tractive power of 2,400kW in diesel mode. The four-axle locomotive will reach a top speed of 160km/h. On electrified sections the locomotive can run under 15kV lines. In electric mode its tractive power will be 2,000kW.

Jérôme Méline, CEO of ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft, said:

“These two locomotives are an innovative addition for us, which will bring many economic and environmental benefits.”

According to Allianz pro Schiene, rail freight produces 80 percent less carbon emissions than road freight per ton kilometre.
