British Steel Launches New High-Strength S460M Structural Steel Grade

British Steel has increased its offering to the construction market by introducing a new high-strength structural steel grade.

Sections made from the new S460M grade are designed for use in multi-storey and high-rise buildings, as well as a wide range of other commercial and industrial uses.

S460M is the result of extensive research and development by the company’s metallurgy experts, and is the first product launched by British Steel since the new company was formed by Jingye Group in March.

British Steel CEO, Ron Deelen, said:

“As the UK’s only manufacturer of structural steel sections, we’re delighted to deliver a new high-quality steel grade at such an important time for the construction market.

“S460M provides the optimum balance between cost and weight, along with improved environmental performance – British manufacturing at its best.

“Britain is committed to building for the future and products like this, and the many others we make, mean we’re well-placed to play a significant role in the economic recovery of this country.

“The benefits of highly-skilled British workers being at the heart of major construction and infrastructure projects will be felt far and wide so let’s build with UK manufacturers and steel made in the UK.”

Steel for the S460M grade is manufactured at the company’s Scunthorpe steelworks before being rolled into structural sections at its Teesside Beam Mill where an extra shift, creating 40 jobs, was introduced earlier this year.

British Steel’s high-strength sections outperform existing steel grades through their higher tensile and yield strength. Using high-strength steel such as S460M has a number of benefits:

  • Cost reduction: less weight and lighter foundations reduce overall building costs
  • Increased space: lighter sections will allow an increase in overall space within the building
  • Lower embodied carbon: less carbon in direct proportion to the weight saving
  • Reduced carbon emissions: less weight means less transport and less raw material consumption
British Steel Commercial Director, Construction, Ben Cunliffe, said:

“Our UK mills produce a comprehensive range of bespoke sections with unrivalled availability and lead times, and the new S460M grade is a superb addition to our product range.

“Our team of experienced metallurgists provides dedicated technical support to customers, including detailed metallurgical analysis to solve specific processing challenges, and the development of new and more advanced grades of steel for increasingly demanding applications.”

As the only UK manufacturer of structural sections, our steel products are CE and UKCA marked and tested to the highest standards, providing quality and reassurance for the construction market.

We are ISO 9001: 2015 accredited and all material is tested to the highest standards in our independently approved ISO 17025 test houses, assuring full traceability.

Our S460M structural sections are produced according to EN 10025-4. Rigorous impact tests are carried out at prescribed temperatures in accordance with this, ensuring full compliance with the Construction Products Regulation.

We’re also Environmental and Sustainability Standard BES 6001 certified, guaranteeing commitment to responsibly sourced materials.
