Alstom Delivers Driving Simulator for Bucharest’s New Metro Trains

Alstom has delivered a driving simulator to Bucharest’s metro operator, Metrorex to support driver training on the new Metropolis metro trains for Line 5.

Designed to enhance practical driver training, the simulator leverages advanced Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, creating a “Digital Twin” of the real metro environment, including tracks, stations, and signalling systems.

This next-generation training tool has been installed at the Valea Ialomitei station, where Metrorex has signed the Site Acceptance Certificate following rigorous testing.

The simulator replicates the exact configuration of the driver’s cabin in the Alstom Metropolis metro trains, creating realistic operational scenarios with digital counterparts of Line 5 infrastructure.

Bucharest’s Line 5 is the first in Romania to feature a Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. The simulator therefore enables training for the high-frequency operation made possible by CBTC, with a 90-second interval between trains.

Gabriel Stanciu, Alstom Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova said:

“At Alstom, safety is our utmost concern, and it's integrated into every stage of our design process to enhance passenger experience. With the technological advancements available today, we're able to create a secure learning environment for future drivers and technicians, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to operate the latest generation of rolling stock responsibly.”

The simulator will initially be used to train six Metrorex instructors, who will then qualify to train other drivers and technicians.

During simulations, instructors can replicate real-world traffic and potential operational issues, providing practical, immersive learning experiences.

Line 5, already in service since 2020 with a conventional signalling system by Alstom, will gain increased safety and efficiency upon full CBTC integration.

Currently, four Metropolis trains are undergoing tests at the Berceni Depot as part of the certification process before being approved for passenger service.
