Alstom has successfully delivered the first Metropolis metro train for the Chennai Metro Phase II project.

Manufactured in its Sricity site in Andhra Pradesh and designed in Bangalore (Karnataka), these trains are 100% ‘made in India’. They have a top operating speed of 90km/h with a standard operating speed of 80km/h.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director Alstom India, said Chennai Metro had become a beacon of efficient and reliable transportation.

Olivier Loison:

We are proud to support this vision by delivering world-class, made-in-India driverless metro trains that not only elevate the commuter experience but also drive sustainable mobility by reducing emissions and easing road congestion. As India's trusted partner in advancing sustainable transportation, Alstom is committed to strengthening this partnership and reshaping Chennai's mass transit landscape for a greener future.

Production of these trainsets started in February 2024. Alstom will deliver 36 trains in total, comprising three cars each. They will run on the 26km corridor that connects Poonamallee Bypass to Light House via 28 stations. Of these, 18 are elevated and 10 are underground.

As part of this 124 million EUR project, Alstom will also train the Chennai Metro personnel in operating and maintaining the trainsets. They are fitted with automatic train operation (ATO) and automatic train protection (ATP) to enable these trains to operate without a driver, unattended, i.e. at grade of automation level 4.

Regenerative braking means the trains will conserve as much energy as possible.

Alstom was first awarded a contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) in 2010. Since then, the rolling stock manufacturer has delivered 208 metro cards for Phase I of the Chennai Metro. In addition, Alstom has designed, tested and commissioned track work covering 45km on these corridors.
