Deutsche Bahn (DB) has commissioned Alstom Transport Germany and Siemens Mobility to each develop a vehicle concept for the new high-speed ICE trains (HGV 3.0).
The two companies will work with DB, who will contribute its experience with operating one of the world’s largest high-speed fleets.
Once a concept has been drawn up, another call for tenders is expected to be launched in the second half of 2023 for the development, construction and approval of the new fleet. This tender will also be open to other manufacturers.
The new trains are expected to enter service from the early 2030s, replacing older ICE 3 trains and expanding the ICE fleet to serve growing passenger numbers.
The ICE vehicles will be single-deck trains with approximately 950 seats and a maximum length of 400 meters. They will operate at a speed of at least 300 kilometres per hour.
