US: MBTA Codman Yard Expansion and Improvement Project to Start Next Month

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced that work will begin on the Codman Yard Expansion and Improvement project next month, with construction beginning in early 2023.

Located just beyond Ashmont station in Dorchester, Boston, Codman Yard is one of several facilities that stores, maintains and inspects Red Line subway vehicles.

Over 100 years old, it was last modernised in the 1980s and can currently hold up to 70 vehicles.

The work, being undertaken by the Red Line transformation team, will include replacing existing tracks and adding six new storage tracks within the yard.

This will enable a further 36 vehicles to be stored here, increasing yard capacity by more than 50%.

Other upgrades to the yard will include improvements to the vehicle wash and replacements of the inspection pits, Ashmont double rail crossover, lighting and power.

This project is part of the MBTA’s capital transformation programme, which follows a holistic approach to transforming the authority’s Green, Orange and Red Lines.

The programme is aligned by six levels of transformation. These focus on improving safety and bringing infrastructure into a state of good repair, enhancing accessibility, replacing legacy fleets, increasing passenger capacity, modernising rider experience, and expanding service.

Steve Poftak, MBTA General Manager, said:

“The work to be completed at Codman Yard will assist in the revitalisation of the Red Line.

“With safety as our top priority, upgrades and improvements to come at Codman Yard will create a safer, more efficient yard for MBTA employees as well as an overall improved space where Red Line trains can be cleaned, stored and maintained.

“Improvements made at Codman Yard will also support the commissioning of our new and improved Red Line fleet, bringing the benefits of capacity and reliability to our riders.”

The project is currently scheduled for completion in autumn 2025. However, MBTA’s capital transformation team is looking into ways to potentially speed up completion.
