UK’s First Tri-Mode Trains Launch on South Wales Metro

Transport for Wales (TfW) has introduced the UK’s first tri-mode electric trains on the South Wales Metro.

The Class 756 FLIRT trains have been built by Stadler. They will initially serve the Merthyr and Aberdare lines, followed by the Treherbert line, replacing older trains in a phased rollout. In total, fourteen trains are expected to be operational by spring 2025.

The new trains are a key component of TfW’s 800 million GBP investment in modernising its fleet and rail infrastructure.

Powered by 25,000V overhead electrified wires, the tri-mode technology allows the trains to seamlessly switch between electric, diesel, and battery power, ensuring efficient operation even on tracks without electrification.

James Price, Transport for Wales CEO said:

“This is a huge moment for TfW and Wales, as we’re the first in the UK to be introducing this modern ‘tri-mode’ train into passenger service.

“Our teams and delivery partners have been working on transforming our rail infrastructure in South Wales for the last three years and this signifies the next phase of the South Wales Metro.

“We’ve been modernising and electrifying the railway line and we are now extremely proud to be able to introduce the first of our brand-new trains that will be powered by electricity.”

The Class 756 trains offer significant improvements for travellers, including:

  • Increased seating capacity with modern air-conditioned interiors
  • Power sockets and onboard Wi-Fi
  • Real-time travel information screens
  • Automatic level boarding
  • Space for up to six bicycles
Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales said:

“This is great news and a truly historic moment as we see the introduction of the first brand new electric trains on the south Wales metro. These state-of-the-art electric trains with greater capacity will make passengers journeys more comfortable and with the addition of the latest technology allowing for Wi Fi and up to the minute travel information screens, are sure to encourage more people to use the train for their travel needs.”
