UK: FirstGroup Looks to Engage Young People to Create ‘Generation Rail’

First Rail is calling for a comprehensive industry approach to engage young people as lifelong rail advocates and unlock a ‘Generation Rail’ by 2050.

Recent research conducted by Field Research suggests that young people in major UK cities would use trains more if services were reliable, affordable, and offered consistent amenities, such as Wi-Fi, charging points, and clean facilities.

The findings align with national trends showing a significant increase in rail usage. Between Q1 2023 and Q1 2024, train journeys rose by 13%, partly driven by the introduction of the Elizabeth Line, which attracted new users. Meanwhile, the number of young people holding driving licenses has dropped, indicating a shift towards public transportation.

To unlock ‘Generation Rail’ First Rail has outlined several key recommendations to transform young people’s experiences:

  • Enhanced Railcard Benefits: Introduce nationwide flexible ‘Superfares’ to offer more affordable travel options for young people
  • Protected Late-Night Services: Ensure the availability of late-night trains, making it easier for young people to rely on rail travel for evening outings
  • Consistent On-Board Amenities: Guarantee minimum standards for amenities such as Wi-Fi and charging points on all trains
  • Young Persons Advisory Panel: Establish a panel to maintain ongoing dialogue with young passengers, ensuring their needs and preferences are considered in decision-making
Steve Montgomery, Managing Director of First Rail, said:

“Generation Rail is about looking to the future. How can we build on the growth in passenger numbers over the past two decades and ensure many more people are using the train by 2050?

“It needs whole industry solutions – that means operating companies, the government, Network Rail and trade unions – working together on common sense reforms to ensure the reliable, consistent and value for money service we all want is delivered and expanded. We look forward to working closely with the new government to ensure we continue providing competitive and improved services for our customers.

“We work in genuine partnership with the public sector to provide efficient, reliable, safe and increasingly sustainable transport links that connect communities, and our services are critical to ensuring local economies are vibrant and robust.

“Generation Rail is part of our contribution to debates about the future of rail in the UK. Young passengers are a vital part of that future as we work to drive up usage, promote modal shift and ensure our nation is better connected.”
