HS2 has invited Hitachi Rail GTS UK Limited; Indra Sistemas S.A; and Siemens Mobility Limited to bid on a tender to supply the station control systems for the high-speed rail project.
These major contracts cover the provision and maintenance of the station control systems that will give trains approval to depart from HS2’s four new stations:
- London Euston
- Old Oak Common
- Interchange
- Birmingham Curzon Street

The station control systems will include a network of cameras linked to central control rooms. The cameras will monitor the 400-metre-long platforms to ensure passengers have safely boarded the train. A signal will then be given to allow the train to close its doors and leave the station.
This process will help ensure the trains depart as efficiently as possible, achieving optimum dwell times.
At Old Oak Common and Interchange, platform screen doors will be procured under a separate contract. Here, a team of dispatchers will monitor the cameras and use the train dispatch system to provide approval for the platform screen doors to close so the train can depart.
At terminus stations, such as Curzon Street, platform edge doors won’t be provided. The approval will therefore be sent directly to the train by the train dispatch system.
HS2 Ltd’s Procurement Director, Andew Cubitt, said:HS2 will transform journeys between London, Birmingham and the north, boosting regional growth and freeing up space on the existing network for more freight and local services.
Train Dispatch Systems will play a vital role in the operation of our services – ensuring efficient and safe dispatch of the HS2 trains from our new stations. It’s great to see so much interest in these contracts and I look forward to working with the team to ensure we are able to deliver the best quality and value for the project.
Under this tender, HS2 Ltd intends to award two contracts to the same contractor. The first will cover the design, installation, testing and commissioning, while the second will cover up to 15 years of maintenance and technical support.
The contracts will be awarded in 2025.
