The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project has entered its final testing phase on the City section, preparing for the start of service in August.
This new metro line will connect Chatswood with Sydenham, passing through the Sydney CBD.

Metro Trains Sydney (MTS), responsible for the operations and maintenance of this service, has initiated the ‘Trial Running’ phase. This phase is essential for obtaining the required accreditation before passenger services begin.
During Trial Running, MTS will simulate various real-world scenarios across the new metro line and its stations. This includes running trains on a set schedule to test reliability, practising operational procedures, and conducting emergency response exercises.
This phase follows the successful integration testing between the existing Metro North West Line and the new section of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest. Integration testing confirmed that trains, signalling, and station systems operate smoothly across the entire line.
Since testing and commissioning began in April 2023, more than 9,000 of the required 11,000 hours of testing have been completed on the 51.5-kilometre stretch from Tallawong to Sydenham.
Once the metro service extends from Chatswood into the city, passengers will benefit from an accessible, safe, and efficient public transport option with quick travel times during peak hours.
