Marking significant progress for the Sydney Metro Southwest project, a joint venture of John Holland Pty Ltd and Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd has been contracted to deliver the final package of works to convert the T3 Bankstown Line to modern metro standards.

These works will be delivered along the 13-kilometre alignment from Marrickville to Bankstown, which is almost 130 years old.

The scope of this contract includes significant upgrades at Bankstown. Here, a new metro station will be constructed and infrastructure and systems will be built and modified to allow for the continued operation of Sydney Trains alongside metro services. Precinct work will also be completed for a new cross-corridor plaza between The Appian Way and Restwell Street.

In addition, the contract includes the completion of work to convert nine stations to metro standards. This incorporates the installation of wayfinding and upgrades to station buildings and structures.

Finally, overhead wiring and final track alignment work will also be completed within the scope of these works.

The upgrade will result in a 12-month shutdown of the line starting later this year. This is set to take place once City metro services begin between Chatswood and Sydenham.
