Voltage Limiting Devices for Railways and Urban Public Transportation

VLDs are designed for the protection of non-living parts of metallic structures in both AC and DC rail traction systems. Voltage Limiting Devices for railways and urban public transportation generate a durable conductive path between the overloaded area and the railway’s substation. This results in increased current loads that are sensed at the substation, tripping the safety switch and thus protecting personnel and equipment. It is recommended to install such limiter between the current return path and non-electrified parts of structures laying adjacent to the rails.

Surge Protection Devices and Monitoring for Railways

With a gradual introduction of electronic protection systems sensitive to the overvoltage into the railway traffic, it is necessary to address also their protection, especially against dangerous effects of lightning strokes that may cause extensive damages to this equipment.

A railway electronic signalling system is a complex system that must be highly reliable and responsive in accordance with the needs of safe railway traffic. Individual functional units are located both inside and outside buildings, at the railway stations and on the lines, i.e. in the open environment where the induction from the lightning (impulse) currents has a great effect, both from the short and long-distance discharges. HAKEL’s range of Surge Protection Devices and Monitoring for Railways includes:

HT-D 4 is designed to protect the transmission of information signals with a maximum data rate of 1 Mbit/s. The connection is done by eight-pole screw terminal socket to which a connected conductor with a cross-section of 0,25 to 1,5 mm2 can be connected. HT-D 4 is produced for 6, 12, 24 and 48 V with up to 4 protected pairs.

HT-NET 5Ecat/RJ is designed to protect the transmission of information signals with a maximum data rate of 170 Mbit/s. The connection is done by RJ connector (structured cabling). HT-NET 5Ecat/RJ is produced for 48 V with up to 4 protected pairs.

PIIIM-275/3+1 is a surge arrester Type 2+3 to be placed into subsidiary switchboards, control boxes or charging stations of electrical vehicles. They can also be used in installations for the protection of automatic railway crossings, traction traffic lights and information panels.

PIVM12,5-275/3+1 is a lightning and surge arrester Type 1+2 to be placed into office buildings, residential buildings, family houses and objects as close as possible to the cable entry – main switchboards. They can also be used in charging stations of electrical vehicles or installations for the protection of automatic railway crossings, traction traffic lights and information panels.

HIG 93+TL400 are designed for monitoring the insulation status of single-phase and 3-phase ungrounded IT power supply systems . If monitoring the insulation status of a single-phase or 3-phase ungrounded IT power supply system with higher operating voltage is required, it is necessary to create an artificial centre using TL400.

Inductor TL400 TL serves for the adaption of IMD circuits to 3-phase ungrounded IT power supply system 3 x 400 V AC
