Škoda Group has been contracted to supply up to 25 new electric trains for Bulgaria’s railway network.
These barrier-free electric units will replace the country’s ageing train fleet and enhance the overall travel experience.
The agreement signed between Škoda Group and the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications covers the delivery of 20 four-car electric trains, alongside an option for an additional five units. In addition, these trains will be fully serviced for 15 years under the terms of the contract.
This order, valued at over half a billion euros, marks a major step forward in Bulgaria’s railway modernisation efforts.
The trains are based on Škoda’s RegioPanter model. They feature more than 300 seats per unit, have air-conditioned carriages, and offer a smooth, quiet ride.
Notably, the units are also barrier-free, ensuring accessibility for all passengers.
“I am honoured that today, with the signing of this contract, we are taking a huge step towards the renewal of the Bulgarian railway. I sincerely hope that very soon we will be greeted with more contracts for new rolling stock and equipment financed under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan.”
The electric trains from Škoda Group will operate at a top speed of 160 km/h and are compatible with the 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification system used on Bulgarian railways.
Passengers will benefit from modern amenities such as ergonomic seating, on-board Wi-Fi, and air-conditioned interiors.
In addition, the units feature partially low-floor designs for easy access, as well as multifunctional areas to accommodate passengers with disabilities, prams, or bicycles.
Alongside low-floor boarding, the trains will have 1,500 mm wide doors, ensuring fast, safe, and convenient passenger interchange.
To enhance safety, the trains will also be equipped with an advanced exterior and interior camera system.
What’s more, the new trains will be equipped with Škoda’s advanced digital technology, including the ETCS Level 2 system, which meets the highest safety standards in Europe. This technology enhances passenger safety and improves the overall reliability of the trains.
“Winning this order confirms that our products can compete internationally and strengthens our position in the modernisation of European rail transport. Bulgaria joins the list of countries where our trains contribute to the attractiveness and accessibility of rail travel.”
The introduction of these new electric trains is part of a broader effort to modernise Bulgaria’s railways. The current fleet, which includes older Škoda locomotives, will be replaced with vehicles that meet the latest Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and European standards.
These new trains are also expected to bring significant savings in operating costs due to their advanced technology and lower energy consumption.
