Singapore: Mitsubishi to Supply 8 Additional Trains for Sengkang-Punggol LRT

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been contracted by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) to supply an additional 8 two-car trains for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (LRT) network.

The Sengkang-Punggol LRT network was inaugurated in 2003 and operates as an automated guideway system between two stations on Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North East Line.

MHI’s latest contract to expand the line’s capacity builds upon earlier orders to supply 17 two-car trains and upgrade the signalling system, guideway and vehicle maintenance equipment in response to an increase in passengers using this service.

In addition to boosting capacity, the newly ordered cars will also offer improved operation and maintenance efficiency to help the service run smoothly.

Kenji Terasawa, CEO and Head of Engineering Solutions at MHI said:

“Over the past two decades, we have supported Singapore’s LTA in providing convenient and dependable transportation services by supplying the Sengkang Punggol LRT system with highly reliable trains and providing a wide range of after-sales services.

“We are honoured to contribute to this expansion project and look forward to continuing our partnership with LTA to provide safe and reliable transportation for people in Singapore.”
