Singapore LTA Awards Two Civil Contracts for Cross Island Line

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded two civil contracts for the Cross Island Line project.

The first contract is for the design and construction of the Punggol interchange station for the Cross Island Line – Punggol Extension (CPe).

The second is for the design and construction of a bored tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk as part of the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2) package.

Design and Construction of Punggol Interchange Station

The contract for the design and construction of Punggol interchange station was awarded to Woh Hup Limited at a value of approximately 496 million SGD (299 million GBP).

The 7.3-kilometre CPe will include four stations: Punggol, Riviera, Elias and Pasir Ris.

The work for this contract will also include alterations to the existing North-East Line (NEL) Punggol station to allow for seamless transfers.

Design and Construction of Bored Tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk

The contract for the design and construction of the bored tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk as part of the CRL2 project was awarded to Obayashi Corporation and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co. Pte Ltd Joint Venture. It is valued at around 758 million SGD (458 million GBP).

A tunnel boring machine (TBM), measuring about 12 metres in diameter will be used to construct the single 5-kilometre-long tunnel, which will contain two tracks.

A 2-kilometre stretch of the bored tunnel will pass under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Here, the tunnel will be constructed up to 70 metres below ground level, rather than the usual 20-30 metres.

Construction works for the CPe Punggol interchange station and the bored tunnel for CRL2 are expected to start in the first half of 2023, with passenger service scheduled to commence in 2032.

The Cross Island Line (CRL) is Singapore’s eighth MRT line and will be constructed in three phases.

Phase 1 is 29 kilometres long and will serve 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. CRL Phase 2 is approximately 15 kilometres long and will consist of six underground stations. Engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 remain ongoing.
