Siemens Mobility has given the new ÖBB Railjet M its world premiere at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, showcasing the electrical unit responsible for long-distance routes in the Alpine region.
As part of a 2023 agreement, 31 EMUs will be built in the Railjet M configuration as part of 100 EMUs ordered by ÖBB. These are based on the Siemens Mireo platform.
Siemens’ new revelation comes with promises of higher capacity, improved passenger comfort, and strong availability through digital technologies.
Passenger Environment
With the ability to carry 257 passengers (27 in first class, 188 in second class, and 42 on folding seats), the Railjet M accommodates those travelling, with several amenities.
These include a vending-machine catering zone, a family area with a children’s cinema and play space, and high-performance Wi-Fi linked to ÖBB’s Railnet portal.
Technical Details
Boasting a top speed of 160 km/h, the ÖBB Railjet M is approximately 160 metres long and fitted with ETCS, ensuring its reliability is maximised.
The focus on long-term maintenance of the ÖBB Railjet M is clear, with continuous on-board self-diagnosis and a lightweight frame intended to cut energy consumption and reduce infrastructure wear.
The vehicles follow a single-car concept, with their weight- and space-optimised bogies developed at Siemens Mobility’s Competence Centre for Bogies and Pantographs in Graz.
This allowed for additional interior space while supporting reliability under demanding Alpine operating conditions.
Testing Programme
Earlier this year, the Railjet M was tested in the climatic wind tunnel in Vienna, where it was exposed to temperatures down to –25°C alongside simulated snowfall and high winds.
Further tests are still underway, with progress being made at the Siemens Test Center in Wegberg-Wildenrath.
