The construction of this section involved over 300 direct suppliers and 400 direct and indirect workers.

The viaduct is roughly 62 metres long and 750 tonnes in weight – this is the equivalent of four Boeing 747s.

The structure was assembled on site and then raised in place. Hydraulic pistons were then used to slide the deck, which rests 10m above ground, across reinforced cement beams and metal supports by approximately 20 metres a day until it reached the desired spot.

Once the last of the work on the deck in completed the viaduct will be ready for work to begin on electrical features. This is expected to begin in the next few months.

The Palermo-Catania project is currently the biggest infrastructure project underway in Sicily. With trains travelling at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour, the line will connect the two cities in less than two hours.

Webuild is also working on the Fiumefreddo-Taormina and Taormina-Letojanni sections of the line.
