Tracsis Rail Technology & Services is delighted to announce that ScotRail is expanding its innovative pay-as-you-go ticketing app, developed by Tracsis, following the successful completion of a six-month pilot.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in modernising UK rail travel, offering more customers the convenience of seamless, ticket-free journeys.

The Tap&Pay app, powered by the state-of-the-art Hopsta platform, is currently available on ScotRail services within the Strathclyde area and on routes between Strathclyde and Edinburgh.

The app, now available for download in app stores, enables easy, ticket-free travel using a single-use barcode.  The app works by generating a single-use barcode that can be scanned at ticket gates and on mobile devices.  Customers’ journey details are logged by scanning the barcode, with the app identifying the origin and destination station through location mapping.

At the end of the journey, the Tap&Pay app will automatically calculate and charge the best available fare based on the journey made and time of travel. To ensure customers are provided with the best-value fare, those making multiple trips on the same route over a week will never pay more than the cost of a weekly season ticket.

The Tap&Pay app pilot has already garnered attention within the transport industry, with Tracsis and ScotRail shortlisted for a prestigious Transport Ticketing Award in the Ticketing Technology of the Year category. The nomination highlights the collaborative effort behind the project and its potential to revolutionise rail travel in the UK and beyond by offering a user-friendly, efficient, and innovative solution.

Simon Critchley, Managing Director, Tracsis Rail Technology & Services, said:

Tap&Pay represents a significant step forward in modernising rail travel, making journeys easier and more convenient for passengers. This project with ScotRail highlights the adaptability of our technology, along with the strategic focus and commitment to innovation that we share with our customers. The Transport Ticketing Award nomination is a fantastic recognition of the innovation and collaboration behind this achievement.

Claire Dickie, Commercial Director, ScotRail, said:

ScotRail is committed to improving the travel experience for our customers, and the launch of our new Tap&Pay app will make rail travel even more convenient for customers across large parts of the central belt. The Tap&Pay app provides a smarter, more convenient way to travel, ensuring customers have a seamless travel experience and receive the best value fare for their journeys. We are excited to offer more customers the chance to travel without the need to pre-purchase tickets in this next phase of the trial.

ScotRail’s partnership with Tracsis reflects a shared commitment to improving the passenger journey while ensuring cost-effective and reliable solutions for rail operators.

Tracsis’ pay-as-you-go smart ticketing technology has been deployed on a standalone basis with multiple train operators across the UK. To date, over 30 million customer journeys have been processed using a mix of ITSO smartcard and contactless bankcard transactions.
