During the event, which is taking place in Madrid, Sonia Araujo, General Director of Innovation, Sustainability, and Digital Transformation at Renfe Operadora, emphasised the importance of providing accessible information to promote sustainable and efficient travel.

During a panel discussion on Intermodality: Collective, Accessible, and Sustainable Mobility, Araujo stated:

“We must share real-time data and information that makes it easier for citizens to plan their trips and choose their mode of public transport.”

The panel explored the ways transport providers can collaborate to create a mobility model tailored to the evolving needs of modern travellers.

Araujo highlighted that the provision of reliable, real-time information is key to encouraging a shift away from private car use and supporting a growing preference for public transport solutions. She underlined that digital transformation is central to achieving this vision.

Since late 2018, Renfe has invested 118 million EUR to digitise over 900 stations and 164 million EUR in modernising its ticketing systems, while also integrating robotic and AI-driven efficiencies across internal operations. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to leverage technology ethically and sustainably to align transport services with public demand.

Araujo noted:

“AI, digital transformation, technological tools, and also data are going to be the key vectors to transform the mobility of the future.”

Other industry leaders at the event echoed this emphasis and called for collaboration. Esther Mateo, General Director of Security, Processes, and Corporate Systems at Adif, stressed that isolated efforts by individual organisations would fall short of achieving meaningful mobility improvements.

Mateo warned:

“If each one seeks its own scope and impact and information is not shared, the sum of the different actions will never give the mobility we are looking for.”

Beyond technological advancements, Mateo stressed the importance of a cultural shift in how transport providers communicate and engage with stakeholders, including passengers. As digital transformation reshapes the sector, trust and transparency through accessible data is arguably key to creating a more connected and user-centric mobility landscape.
