Romania: Alstom and ARF Deploy Coradia Stream Electric Train

Alstom and Romania’s Railway Reform Authority (ARF) have launched the first of 37 Coradia Stream regional electric trains into commercial service.

Following 10,000 km of testing, the train began operations on the Bucharest-Brasov route on 20 November, marking the arrival of Romania’s first new electric train in 30 years.

This train is part of a 37-unit fleet ordered by ARF, designed to support Romania’s transition to modern and eco-friendly rail transport.

Each six-car train accommodates 351 passengers, featuring a 100% low-floor design for easy access, eco-friendly toilets (including facilities for reduced mobility passengers), ample luggage storage, and a digital passenger information system. The trains also include a high-precision passenger counting system for traffic optimisation.

With a top speed of 160 km/h, these units aim to improve connectivity to key destinations such as Brasov and Constanta.

Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director Alstom Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova said:

“I am delighted that the 37 modern regional electric trains from Alstom are going to make a difference in the quality of railway transport towards popular destinations such as Brasov and Constanta. These modern trains will play a significant role in the country's shift towards sustainable mobility, aligned with our aspiration to promote greener and more intelligent mobility solutions on a global scale.”

ARF’s contract with Alstom also includes 15 years of maintenance services, with an option for a 15-year extension. Alstom is therefore investing 50 million EUR in a state-of-the-art maintenance depot in Bucharest, equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, underfloor wheel lathes, and sustainable technology.

The depot’s first phase opened in April 2024, with the second phase now set to create a fully equipped maintenance facility spanning 30,000 square metres.

Stanciu added:

“The investment in a new Alstom maintenance depot for the ARF trains represents a new chapter for our presence in Romania. As we celebrate Alstom's 30th anniversary in the country this year, this achievement becomes even more meaningful.”

The Coradia Stream trains, designed specifically for the European market, meet ERTMS Level 2 standards and are compatible with all major European power systems. Over 700 units are already in service across countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy.
