Urban Bavarian infrastructure maintenance at InnoTrans.

Accompanied by traditional brass music, Wolfgang R. Fally, Managing Director of Robel Bahnbaumaschinen GmbH, handed over the world’s first Robel hybrid rail vehicle to Oliver Glaser, Head of the Rail Division of Stadtwerke München (SWM) and member of the management of the Munich Transport Company (MVG), and Christian Schallenkammer, Project Manager for Rail Vehicle Procurement at SWM on September 25 in Berlin.

A trade fair novelty from Freilassing for the Bavarian capital, a delegation from the Robel works band and great public interest created an Oktoberfest atmosphere at the InnoTrans outdoor area.

With a total of ten new bidirectional vehicles from the RORUNNER E³ series, SWM is converting its fleet for the subway maintenance to largely electric, emission-free and low- noise operation. New technology is included in the hybrid drive solution, among other things: the journey to and from the construction site is carried out electrically via a conductor rail, a battery provides the energy for more than three hours of work in the tunnel and crane operation, the diesel generator is only intended as a backup.

Wolfgang R. Fally said:

We are very proud of this vehicle - the result of our long-term collaboration with the municipal utilities. Together we have succeeded in finding technological solutions for existing and future requirements. But what really counts is the smooth and at the same time human- and environmentally-friendly operation of the RORUNNER in Munich.

Oliver Glaser said:

With the new hybrid rail vehicles, we can significantly improve the working conditions for our employees. In addition, we are technically able to ensure the maintenance of the infrastructure and the corresponding logistics and to meet the increased requirements.

Christian Schallenkammer said:

At the time of the order, our specifications for the drive technology were still quite daring for the time. Today we can present a vehicle concept together with Robel and as SWM/MVG we are taking on a pioneering role in Germany. With ten new vehicles we are achieving a generational change in the fleet of operational vehicles for the subway.
