Spain: Adif Chooses Saitec for Rincón de Soto Bypass Project

Engineering firm Saitec has been chosen to design and build the Rincón de Soto bypass in the Castejón-Logroño section of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean corridor.

The work is expected to be completed over a 15-month period and is being funded by the European Union-NextGenerationEU programme.

The contract, which was awarded by the Spanish rail infrastructure manager Adif, is valued at just shy of two million euros (2.17m USD) and will allow the bypass project to be adapted to meet the European Innovation Council’s (EIC) Complementary Informative Study from 2009.

This includes a single electrified standard-gauge track and will allow speeds of up to 200 kilometres an hour. Rincón de Soto station will be modified to have a 220-metre platform with one general track and one section track and there will also be a freight train overtaking and parking post (PAET) with a 750-metre-long siding track at a location similar to that set out in the original study.

Saitec must also consider issues like connections to the existing track, the future station, the PAET, the Ebro river flood zone and the irrigation network.

The contract includes the design of all rail systems, the platform and the superstructure of the tracks, electrification and energy systems, the platforms and underpasses and any necessary elements to adapt the civil works of the current station to the new configuration.

It also includes procuring all relevant licenses and permits.

The construction part of the project includes track assembly, electrification of the section and all other relevant civil works.
