Siemens Mobility has been awarded a set of three major contracts for the modernisation of railway signalling and interlocking systems in Romania.
Leading a consortium formed together with ELSITEL and IMSAT, Siemens will modernise signalling infrastructure across roughly 560km of railway lines, including 66 stations, 13 centralised operation centres and 122 level crossings, as well as more than 2,000 signals.
Together, the three contracts represent a value of around 308 million EUR, and form one of the most comprehensive signalling modernisations in Romanian history.
The modernisation efforts cover railway sections and stations within the Cluj, Timișoara, Iași and Galați regional railway branches, and will see the replacement of aging signalling infrastructure that has exceeded its designed operational lifecycle.
Existing electrodynamic and mechanical interlocking systems will be upgraded with modern signalling and traffic management technologies in a bid to improve safety, capacity, reliability and operational performance.
The project supports both Romania and the European Union’s objectives to strengthen rail transport as a sustainable mobility solution and, by enabling more efficient rail services, the modernisation is expected to help encourage the shift of passenger and freight from road to rail, supporting wider decarbonisation goals.
