CAF has secured a contract to supply intercity trains to Morocco’s national railway operator, Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF).

The agreement includes the delivery of 30 modern intercity trains, with an option for an additional 10 units. The contract also includes provisions for technical assistance and spare parts supply services.

This marks CAF’s first project in Morocco. The contract is valued at nearly 600 million EUR, excluding potential additional options. The project will be financed through the Spanish Government’s Business Internationalisation Fund (FIEM).

The trains are designed for intercity services and will operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h. Each unit will provide more than 500 seats and include space for passengers with reduced mobility.

ONCF plans to deploy these trains on key routes, including the Fez-Marrakech and Kenitra-Fez lines. The introduction of new rolling stock is expected to enhance rail services, improve regional connectivity, and increase passenger capacity.

This contract is part of ONCF’s strategy to upgrade the rail network ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The long-term goal is to expand rail coverage to 87% of the population by 2040, up from the current 51%, connecting over 40 cities compared to the 23 currently served.

The order is part of ONCF’s investment in procuring up to 168 trains from Alstom, CAF and Hyundai Rotem.
