Hitachi Rail has selected Knorr-Bremse to manufacture the hydraulic brake systems, entrance and HVAC systems for 30 new light rail vehicles for the Italian city of Turin. The contract includes an option to fit the systems for 40 further units.
Hitachi will supply the light rail vehicles to its customer, GTT (Turin Transport Group).
The hydraulic braking systems will feature Knorr-Bremse’s electronic brake control with a new interface that uses a redundant Ethernet train network. Knorr-Bremse has also improved its sanding systems in order to optimise the wheel-rail adhesion in poor weather. Dual-channel hydraulic control units for the trailer bogie are designed to assist brake performance. As part of its contract with Hitachi, Knorr-Bremse will supply electromagnetic track brakes so that the trams can brake quickly and safely in traffic.
Knorr-Bremse’s subsidiary IFE will supply sliding plug doors designed to optimise passenger flow at stops.
All of the light rail vehicles will be equipped with an HVAC unit for the driver’s cab and two roof-mounted units. The supplier for these will be Merak, another Knorr-Bremse subsidiary.

The light rail vehicles will connect suburbs and the city centre of Turin.
