Hitachi Rail has secured a contract to modernise the Passenger Information System for the Lisbon Metro network.

This contract includes the complete overhaul of central systems, the installation of new digital screens at 10 key stations, and the introduction of advanced passenger address systems at all stations across the network.

Specifically, Hitachi Rail will deploy its APIS (Advanced Passenger Information System) solution. The system has a scalable and modular design to enable Lisbon Metro to provide real-time traffic information while integrating multimedia content.

This solution will modernise how passengers access information across both trains and stations.

The newly awarded contract marks the revival of a long-standing partnership between Hitachi Rail and Lisbon Metro. It also establishes Hitachi Rail’s APIS solution as the leading passenger information platform in Portugal, now serving the country’s three main public transport infrastructures—Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro, and Infraestruturas de Portugal.

João Araújo, President of the Board of Directors at Hitachi Rail GTS Portugal, said:

This contract is a testament to the quality and functionality of Hitachi Rail’s APIS product. We are thrilled to welcome Lisbon Metro back as a customer and look forward to showcasing our capabilities while fostering a stronger relationship.

The implementation of APIS at Lisbon Metro is part of a wider initiative to enhance digital connectivity and improve the overall passenger experience. The system will allow for seamless information sharing, enabling passengers to receive real-time updates on train arrivals, departures, and service disruptions. The new technology will also support multimedia formats, making it adaptable for future innovations in passenger communication.

Beyond convenience, the introduction of this advanced system reflects Lisbon Metro’s broader commitment to modernise its infrastructure and improve service efficiency. It will also play a crucial role in integrating public transport with other modes of mobility, contributing to a more streamlined and accessible urban transport ecosystem.

Maria Helena Campos, Acting Chairwoman of Metropolitano de Lisboa, said:

This is an important milestone in our commitment to innovation and customer service improvement, contributing to a more accessible, efficient, and future-ready public transport system. With this new system, Lisbon Metro customers will have access to relevant real-time travel information, enabling greater efficiency in their journeys and better integration with other modes of transport. We are confident that this new service, resulting from the signed contract, will further strengthen the quality of the service we provide daily to the Lisbon Metropolitan area.
