Germany: CAF to Supply Additional Battery-Powered Trains for NWL

Rail transport provider Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) has extended its contract with CAF for the supply of an additional 10 battery-powered Civity BEMU trains for the North Rhine-Westphalia region in Germany.

The contract extension is valued at approximately 170 million EUR and also includes fleet maintenance of the new vehicles for a term of 33 years.

The low-noise, climate-friendly Civity BEMU trains will operate on two of NWL’s reactivated lines

This order follows an initial contract awarded to CAF in June 2021 to supply VRR (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr) and NWL with 63 battery-powered trains and the associated fleet maintenance services from 2025 to 2058.

The new trains are set to enter service from 2025 and will operate on lines RB68 and RB76 lines. The battery-powered trains can provide emission-free transport on non-electrified sections of the line, as well as running on tracks with overhead lines.

The Civity BEMU trains therefore offer an alternative to NWL’s current diesel vehicles.

In addition, the extended contract furthers CAF’s success within the German market, adding to the manufacturer’s ongoing projects such as the supply of 51 LRVs for Ruhrbahn GmbH in Essen and 8 trams for the city of Freiburg, as well as 22 LRVs for the city of Bonn.
