How can door systems in rail transit be made even smarter and more connected?

Our collaboration with Interautomation demonstrates how smart sensor technology and AI are creating new possibilities for modern rail operations.

The BMU-3 combines various functions into a single system. These include gap monitoring, platform detection, door monitoring, passenger counting, and step monitoring for contactless object and person detection. In this way, it contributes to greater safety, efficiency, and comfort in rail transit.

A particular highlight is the new passenger-counting function of our BMU-3. Together with Interautomation, we have implemented the Neural Automatic Passenger Counting (NAPC) function. It enables the reliable collection of passenger and object data with an accuracy of over 99%.

What Makes This Solution Special?

The function can be deployed at every single train door equipped with our BMU-3. This gives operators the ability to comprehensively track a train’s occupancy status in real time. The data collected provides a valuable foundation for better assessing capacity utilization and leveraging information specifically for rail operations.

This is made possible by AI-powered training of the system using real-world data from passenger operations. In addition to detecting people, the system can also recognize various objects and mobility aids, including adults, children, bicycles, wheelchairs, and strollers.

But the data alone is just the beginning: The collected information can be processed and visualized on modern passenger information systems. This allows occupancy information to be presented to passengers in an understandable way and creates new opportunities for demand-based passenger information.

For us, “Access to Mobility” also means developing innovative technologies that make information more accessible and make rail transportation smarter.

InnoTrans 2026 gave BODE and Interautomation the opportunity to meet in person at the event, present their joint solution, and discuss their successful collaboration.

Many thanks to Interautomation for the great collaboration!
