EC to Establish New Partnership on Rail Research and Innovation

The European Commission has launched a call for founding members to establish a European Partnership on Rail Research and Innovation.

The European Commission intends to propose the creation of a European Partnership for Rail Research and Innovation to build on the good work done by the existing Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking. The new partnership will look at accelerating research, development and demonstrations of technologies and solutions that can make rail a more attractive mode of transport, enabled by digitalisation and automation. The Commission hopes that the partnership will achieve up to 75 percent market uptake by 2030 to improve competitiveness and European leadership for rail technology.

This proposal sits within the European Union’s policy agenda of delivering a Green Deal.

The European Partnership will stand on a long-term commitment from the European Union and its private members with the goal of developing system-focused solutions that can be industrialised, deployed and put into operation. The European Union will subsequently propose a common Regulation to place the new partnership and other joint undertakings under Horizon Europe.

The European Commission has asked for expressions of interest for founding members and is looking for responses from both public and private entities. These entities should make their interest known before 1 October 2020.
