Construction has begun on Scarborough Centre Station, the first of three new stops for the Scarborough Subway Extension in Toronto, Ontario.

The project forms part of Ontario’s wider transport plan to expand rapid transit across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

The Scarborough Subway Extension will extend Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 2 by 7.8 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road. Once complete, it is expected to serve about 105,000 daily trips and place 38,000 people within walking distance of a subway service.

At Scarborough Centre, early works have started with piling. The station is designed to handle more than 10,000 passengers at peak periods and enable over 7,000 transfers each rush hour. A new bus terminal will be integrated into the site, allowing links to the GO Transit bus network and local bus routes.

The interchange is positioned to serve nearby institutions, including Centennial College’s Progress Campus and the University of Toronto Scarborough, with nearly 30,000 students and staff located in the area.

Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation said:

The Scarborough Subway Extension will be a game-changer for the people of Scarborough, making it easier than ever before for commuters to get around quickly and conveniently.

In the face of President Trump’s tariff threats, this project will also support thousands of skilled trades workers and attract new jobs and investment here in Scarborough and around the province.

The Scarborough Subway Extension is one of four major schemes being advanced under Ontario’s 70 billion CAD transit investment programme for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, alongside the Ontario Line, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and Yonge North Subway Extension.
