VIA Rail Canada has reported strong participation in the Canada Strong Pass programme, which ran between 20 June and 2 September 2025.
More than 50,000 Canadians travelled with free or reduced fares during the summer period, according to newly released figures.
The initiative, led by the Government of Canada, was designed to make rail travel more affordable for families and young people. Children and teenagers aged 17 and under were able to travel at no cost when accompanied by an adult, while passengers aged 18 to 24 were eligible for discounted fares.

VIA Rail data shows that pass holders travelled more than 43 million kilometres over the summer, which is roughly equivalent to crossing the country 9,000 times. The scheme is estimated to have saved travellers a combined 6.6 million CAD in fares.
VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Mario Péloquin said:Through the Canada Strong Pass, we helped Canadians reconnect with their country, their communities, and each other safely, comfortably, and sustainably. It was more than just a discount: it was an invitation to explore and learn more about VIA Rail’s services.
I also want to thank our dedicated VIA Rail teams who, as always, welcomed passengers with warmth and ensured an exceptional travel experience throughout the busy summer months.
The Canada Strong Pass contributed to a 6.5% increase in ridership compared with the same period in 2024. Journeys included well-known long-distance services such as Toronto–Vancouver and Montréal–Halifax, regional services including Churchill–Winnipeg, and routes in the busy Québec City–Windsor Corridor.
VIA Rail states that the programme contributed to its ongoing work to connect Canadian communities while supporting local economies and encouraging lower-carbon transport.
Jonathan Goldbloom, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of VIA Rail said:With breathtaking panoramas stretching from coast to coast to coast, I truly believe Canada is the most magnificent country on Earth. I’m proud of the role VIA Rail has played in this program,e, enabling Canadians from all regions and generations to discover the very best our country has to offer.
