On Sunday, 11 August, Caltrain officially introduced the first of its new electric trains into regular service.
Additional units will now be gradually introduced prior to the full launch of an electrified schedule between San Francisco and San Jose on Saturday 21 September.
The new electric trains can accelerate and decelerate more quickly than the older diesel trains and will thus enable faster and more frequent service.
Overall service capacity will also increase by 20%, with 16 stations seeing trains every 15-20 minutes during peak hours.
In addition to improved speed and frequency, the new trains offer a range of enhanced amenities. Passengers will enjoy Wi-Fi, digital onboard displays, power outlets at each forward-facing seat, energy-efficient lighting, and improved climate control systems.
Other features include baby-changing tables in the bathrooms, security cameras, and expanded storage under cantilevered seats.
The electric trains are also significantly quieter than their diesel predecessors, improving the experience for both riders and residents living near the tracks.
Meanwhile, the shift from diesel to electric trains is a key component of regional and state climate action goals. The new electric trains are expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 metric tonnes annually.
“The future of California’s rail systems will be powered by clean, renewable energy, and as the Biden-Harris Administration makes the biggest investment in public transit in US history, we were proud to help fund the transformative Caltrain electrification project. Converting the 51-mile-long rail system from diesel to electric will not only improve service for riders and air quality all along the route, it will also set a standard for other rail systems to follow as we work to reduce carbon pollution across the country.”
