Austria: ÖBB to Modernise Pannonia Railway

ÖBB is completing modernisation works on the Pannonia Railway, a key 40-kilometre route in Austria.

These improvements aim to enhance passenger comfort and accessibility.

By the end of November 2024, four key stations—Schützen am Gebirge, Donnerskirchen, Breitenbrunn, and Winden am See—will be fully modernised, featuring upgraded facilities and infrastructure.

The renovation of these stations will involve several enhancements, including:

  • Platform Renewal: Edge platforms will be fully renovated to include barrier-free access, alongside a guidance system for the visually impaired.
  • Construction of Technical Rooms and Platform Roofs: These additions will support the operation and maintenance of the stations.
  • Upgraded Amenities: New benches, waste bins, and improved signage will be installed to enhance passenger convenience.
  • Lighting and Audio Systems: Platform lighting and loudspeaker systems will be renewed to improve safety and communication.

In addition to the station upgrades, parking and bicycle facilities at Donnerskirchen and Breitenbrunn will also be expanded to better accommodate travellers.

Construction works on this project commenced on 2 September 2024 at Donnerskirchen, Breitenbrunn, and Winden am See, with works at Schützen am Gebirge beginning on 30 September. All works are scheduled for completion by 29 November 2024.

In parallel with these station upgrades, track maintenance between Schützen am Gebirge and Breitenbrunn will renew the track coverings. The ballast bed on the section between Schützen and Winden will also be compacted, requiring the temporary closure of some railway crossings.

The modernisation measures on the Pannonia Railway represent a joint investment of approximately 4 million EUR. The project is being funded by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), the state of Burgenland, and local municipalities.
