Amtrak has introduced a new generation of high-speed trains on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) with the launch of its NextGen Acela service.

The inaugural departures took place this morning at 5am from Washington, D.C., and 6am from Boston. This marks the first fleet replacement on the corridor’s premium service since Acela’s original introduction in December 2000.

Amtrak President Roger Harris said:

Acela is synonymous with American high-speed trains, and today marks a new era of next-generation service. On behalf of everyone at Amtrak, I’m proud to welcome you aboard NextGen Acela. The future of high-speed rail starts now.

The NextGen Acela fleet has been manufactured by Alstom at its facility in Hornell, New York, with components sourced from suppliers across 29 states. According to Amtrak, the programme has supported approximately 15,000 jobs in the United States.

The new trainsets offer increased passenger capacity, with a 27% rise in seats per departure compared with the previous Acela fleet. By 2027, 28 trainsets are expected to be in service, allowing for additional weekday and weekend operations.

Onboard, passengers benefit from Wi-Fi designed to handle higher-speed connections, individual power outlets, reading lights, and revised seating layouts. A redesigned café car provides food and beverage options, with trolley service available in Business Class.

NextGen Acela services are marked distinctly on Amtrak’s website and mobile app. For the initial rollout, weekday operations will include trains 2153, 2154, 2170, and 2173. On Saturdays, services will be provided by trains 2250 and 2251, while on Sundays, the new fleet will operate trains 2248, 2258, 2259, and 2271.

At an event at Washington Union Station, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy highlighted the government’s role in supporting Amtrak’s fleet modernisation and pledged further attention to station infrastructure, including the redevelopment of Union Station.

US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said:

With these new Acela trainsets, Amtrak will provide more reliable service and lower prices for the American people – all while increasing the organisation’s profitability. But we’re not stopping there. Instead of being a point of pride, Washington’s Union Station has fallen into disrepair. By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost.

The NextGen Acela forms part of Amtrak’s broader fleet renewal strategy. In addition to the Acela replacement, Amtrak is preparing to introduce its new Amtrak Airo trains on routes including the Northeast Regional, Amtrak Cascades, and other East Coast services. Long-distance services are also due to receive new locomotives, while existing rolling stock is undergoing refurbishment with updated seating, lighting, and interior finishes.
