Amtrak has announced that the first new Airo train is en route to Colorado from Siemens Mobility’s factory in Sacramento.

Having been built in California, the trainset is now on its way to Pueblo, CO to complete testing. It will then enter service on the Amtrak Cascades corridor in the Pacific Northwest in 2026.

This vehicle is the first of 83 trainsets ordered by Amtrak for operation on the Amtrak Cascades, Northeast Regional and other routes across the US.

The Amtrak Airo trainsets are more fuel efficient than Amtrak’s older vehicles, producing 90% less particulate emissions in diesel operations.

They will also feature a range of modern passer amenities, including:

  • Spacious comfortable seats
  • Power and USB ports
  • Dedicated chilled and filtered water stations
  • New 5G Wi-Fi and digital information systems
  • Spacious and accessible restrooms, vestibules and Café cars
  • Integrated boarding equipment for customers with reduced mobility
  • Inductive hearing technology for onboard announcements
  • Enhanced lighting
  • Increased storage space for baggage
